Every child’s life follows a path. Some paths are lined with love, stability, and opportunity. They’re shaped by strong families, safe communities, and supportive systems that help children grow, thrive, and reach their full potential.
But for more than two million children around the world, their path looks very different.
When systems fail, families are torn apart by poverty or hardship. Children can then find themselves separated from those who love them and placed in orphanages. Their paths become rocky and uncertain. The road ahead may be marked by obstacles, danger, and isolation. Every turn brings new challenges, and every step forward becomes harder. No child should have to walk that path.
That’s why Children’s Emergency Relief International (CERI) is launching Pathways Home: a commitment to help children remain in families, strengthen their communities, and to create a world where every child grows in family care, not an orphanage.
Through the Pathways Home campaign, CERI is laying the foundation for greater impact; reaching more families, strengthening more communities, and transforming more systems that affect the lives of vulnerable children.
Our three main objectives draw upon CERI’s three pillars of programming: family-based care, strong communities, and system transformation.
Every child deserves a family, and every family deserves the support to stay together. Poverty, not a lack of love, is one of the leading causes of family separation. CERI’s family-based care programs address the root causes of vulnerability, helping families build resilience and independence so every child can grow up in a safe, loving, and nurturing family environment.
No family should have to struggle alone. A family that is seen, connected, and supported by its community is a family less likely to reach a breaking point. CERI builds that surrounding layer of protection, so challenges are detected and solved early, before they lead to unnecessary family separation.
The way a country cares for its children shapes their future. Lasting change requires more than just rewriting one child’s story; CERI helps to build care systems that put family first. By working directly with governments to make family-based care the default, not the exception, CERI ensures fewer children ever enter orphanages.
